How to make an envelope journal

Hey y’all! It’s Katie here with my tutorial for the Season of Connections! Have you ever had a penpal? I used to have half a dozen of them when I was a kid/teenager! I loved getting mail. Truthfully, I still do, I’ve never grown out of that. I love the connection you can have with someone, even though you’re miles and miles away.  So over the past few months, Misty and I have been exchanging letters, and she so kindly returned the ones I sent to her so that I could combine them together into a journal. I like to think of these as our own version of the Van Gogh letters. Today I’m showing you how!

How to Make an Envelope Journal

Supplies:

  • A collection of envelopes. You could use envelopes you’ve received through the mail (like I did!) or blank envelopes!
  • 12×12″ Scrapbooking Paper. Double sided is great!
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Adhesive Runner

How to bind an envelope journal:

Watch the video below to learn how to create an accordion spine journal, using envelopes as the pages. This is a fun no-sew alternative to classic book binding. https://vimeo.com/236436931 (note: in the video you’ll see me adding a strip of washi tape- I got a bit of adhesive crazy at one point off camera, so I was covering up a bit of extra glue with the washi tape.) In this journal I’ve kept all of the letters between Misty and I in their envelopes. How to Make an Envelope Journal How to Make an Envelope Journal

Notes:

  • When creating the accordion spine for my journal,  I creased my paper every half inch, but you can change that to 1″ or more, depending on what you like.
  • If you have different sized envelopes, like I did, make your spine the size of your smallest envelope.
  • Make sure you use a permanent adhesive when gluing the envelopes to the spine, to make sure that your pages don’t fall out! That would be bad!
  • You can leave your envelope journal as is, with the letters inside, or get creative and paint the envelopes and add ephemera.

The stamps are my favorite part about envelopes! If so, make sure you bookmark this tutorial to come back to at a later time!

Creating Envelope Pockets:

This is another fun thing you can do with envelopes, and one that you can do right away in your current journal!  Try adding a small envelope directly onto a page in your journal to add notes or papers into it. How to Make an Envelope Journal How to Make an Envelope Journal

Action Step:

  • Start collecting envelopes for a journal! Once you have enough, come back to this tutorial and try out the accordion spine book technique!
  • Consider what you might include in the envelope pockets!
  • Adhere an envelope onto your next journal page.

I love the idea of extra secrets or surprises in envelopes! I am going to add some to my ‘connections’ journal for sure! I can’t believe you used the eclipse stamps!!! I am so sad, I kept mine unused!
