How to combine contrasting media

Hi again messians!
In this post, I will share with you quick tutorials on contrasting mediums. These are the tools and products you wouldn’t necessarily think about mixing together / the ones that resist each other. I have 4 pairs of contrasting mediums to share with you today have made a video tutorial for each pair. In the videos, you can see step by step how I use the two techniques together and then I am also sharing those finished pages.
Oil Pastel + Ink
A classic pairing! I love how resistant the oil pastel is and how you can play with colours.
Collage + Watercolour
Mixing these two elements gives you such beautiful blending and interesting transparencies.
Acrylics + Felt Tips
My favorite technique in this post! Perfect if you love colour and playing around with matte finishes.
Acrylics + Washi Tape
A messy method resulting in quick layers and depth to your page.
Action Steps
Try at least one of these contrasting medium techniques in your journal this week!

Wonderful techniques Jules. Can’t wait to try them out in my journal and the church bells were quite a lovely touch at the end of the last video. They sound beautiful. 🙂
Aw, thank you Deborah! <3
Brilliant!
Thanks V !!!!!!
Wow, I don’t know which one to try first! Dang… love that last one… it’s perfect for impatient me!
It’s my favorite too! 😀 😀
4 videos from Jules?! Yes, please! Any day of the week! 🙂 These are fantastic tips! I actually love using watercolor with collage, I love how glossy paper resists the color, but it still sticks to some parts of the image!
Exactly!! Thank you!! 🙂
Oh, how I love these recommendations, Jules! So much inspiration in this one post — I especially love how your acrylics + felt tips page came out. So sunny and vibrant. <3
Thank you! It was totally the best one! 😉
Wow! Love these techniques, Jules! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ashley! xo
Julia, I am curious, I really like the first technique. What type of ink do you use? would the Liquitex acrylic inks work?
Hi Heidi, I use Winsor and Newton and although I haven’t tried Liquitex personally, I have seen other people use it in a similar way so I’d say go for it! And let me know how it turns out! <3
